It moves as the chain tightens and relaxes. Current can push it one way and then another. None of that necessarily means the anchor has moved.<\/p>\n<p>That simple fact is at the heart of <strong>anchor monitoring<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Most traditional anchor alarms monitor the position of the boat and try to work out whether its movement is still within an acceptable area. Newer anchor-referenced systems take a different approach: they monitor the position of the anchor itself.<\/p>\n<p>Both approaches can be useful. For plenty of boaters, particularly those who only anchor occasionally, a phone app or chartplotter alarm may be all they need.<\/p>\n<p>But if you spend a lot of time at anchor, sleep aboard regularly or leave the boat while anchored, knowing what the anchor itself is doing can offer another level of confidence.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how the different types of anchor monitoring work, what each can actually tell you, and where their limitations lie.<\/p>\n<h2>What is an anchor monitoring system?<\/h2>\n<p>An <strong>anchor monitoring system<\/strong> is simply a way of watching for movement while a boat is anchored and alerting the crew when that movement falls outside an expected range.<\/p>\n<p>The important question is: \u00ab\u00a0<em>what position is the system actually monitoring?<\/em>*<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the setup, it might be monitoring:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the GPS position of a phone somewhere on the boat<\/li>\n<li>the vessel position reported by a chartplotter<\/li>\n<li>a dedicated GPS sensor aboard the boat<\/li>\n<li>or, in an anchor-referenced system, the position of a device connected to the anchor itself<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That distinction matters because a boat can move a surprisingly long way while the anchor remains perfectly stationary.<\/p>\n<p>If you&rsquo;ve let out 40 metres of chain, for example, the boat has a sizeable area in which it can swing as the wind or current changes. A boat-based system has to distinguish that normal movement from the beginning of an actual anchor drag.<\/p>\n<p>An anchor-referenced system approaches the same problem from the other direction.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of asking:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Has the boat moved too far?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It asks:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Has the anchor moved?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>What anchor monitoring cannot tell you<\/h3>\n<p>No electronic monitoring system replaces a properly chosen anchorage or good anchoring technique.<\/p>\n<p>It cannot tell you that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>you chose the correct anchor for the seabed<\/li>\n<li>you deployed enough chain or rode<\/li>\n<li>the anchor buried properly when initially set<\/li>\n<li>your chain, connectors or windlass are in good condition<\/li>\n<li>the anchorage will remain suitable if the weather changes<\/li>\n<li>it is safe to leave the boat unattended<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Monitoring is another source of information.<\/p>\n<p>It can help you identify unexpected movement, but it remains an aid to seamanship rather than a replacement for the skipper&rsquo;s judgement.<\/p>\n<h2>Boat-referenced versus anchor-referenced GPS monitoring<\/h2>\n<p>This is the main distinction to understand.<\/p>\n<h3>Boat-referenced monitoring<\/h3>\n<p>Most anchor alarms are <strong>boat-referenced<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A phone app, for example, normally uses the phone&rsquo;s GPS position as an approximation of the boat&rsquo;s position. It simply means the system is monitoring something that is <em>supposed<\/em> to move.<\/p>\n<h3>Anchor-referenced monitoring<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Anchor-referenced GPS monitoring<\/strong> changes the reference point.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than monitoring the boat and inferring what the anchor might be doing, the system places the monitoring point at or close to the anchor itself.<\/p>\n<p>The boat can then swing around it without that movement being the primary trigger.<\/p>\n<p>This is the approach used by <a href=\"https:\/\/mooring-solution.com\/product\/morpheis\/\"><strong>Morph\u00e9is<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A connected anchor buoy remains above the anchor through an automatically tensioned line. The electronic enclosure on the buoy monitors its GPS position while a dedicated receiver remains aboard the boat.<\/p>\n<p>The aim is straightforward:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Monitor the anchor. Not the boat.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Morph\u00e9is uses a recommended drag tolerance of at least 4 metres. The buoy itself can move slightly at the surface, so the tolerance allows for normal buoy movement rather than treating every GPS variation as anchor movement.<\/p>\n<p>This gives the system a fundamentally different reference point from a phone or chartplotter alarm.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&rsquo;t mean the rest of the anchoring process becomes less important. It means that once you&rsquo;ve set the anchor properly, the monitoring system is watching the point you&rsquo;re most interested in.<\/p>\n<h2>How a connected anchor buoy, radio link and onboard receiver work together<\/h2>\n<p>A dedicated <strong>anchor-level monitoring<\/strong> system needs several parts to work together.<\/p>\n<p>With Morph\u00e9is, there are three main connected anchor buoy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The mechanical buoy is connected near the anchor and uses an automatically tensioned line to remain close to its position at the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a typical deployment, both units are powered on, the system is attached near the anchor, the anchor is lowered and the buoy is deployed after roughly 10 metres of chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once everything is set, the buoy provides the reference point for monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its integrated line can also be used in a similar way to a conventional trip line to assist with recovering a fouled anchor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The electronic enclosure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The waterproof electronic enclosure attaches to the buoy using four magnets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This contains the GPS monitoring electronics and communicates with the onboard receiver using an independent radio link.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has a published IP68 rating, qualified to 1 metre for 1 hour, and includes an integrated 5 W solar panel to replenish the battery during use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sixteen LEDs also provide night visibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The onboard receiver<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The receiver stays aboard the boat and communicates with the buoy by radio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morph\u00e9is uses an 868 MHz radio connection, with a recommended maximum distance of 100 metres between the buoy and receiver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the onboard alert uses this dedicated radio link, it doesn&rsquo;t depend on a phone app or mobile data to tell the crew aboard that the monitored anchor position has changed beyond the configured tolerance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The receiver provides visual information and a published 100 dB audible alarm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&rsquo;s an important distinction between <strong>onboard monitoring<\/strong> and <strong>remote monitoring<\/strong>, because they don&rsquo;t necessarily rely on the same communication method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Phone apps, chartplotters and dedicated hardware<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There isn&rsquo;t one anchor monitor that makes sense for every boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In practice, anchor monitoring falls into three broad categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Phone anchor alarms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Phone apps are the easiest place to start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They&rsquo;re inexpensive, require no additional hardware and can be useful for anything from lunch stops to occasional overnight anchoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For someone who anchors half a dozen times each summer, will actually wake you<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>None of those issues automatically rules out a phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For occasional anchoring, they&rsquo;re often perfectly manageable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chartplotter anchor alarms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A chartplotter gives you a more integrated boat-based option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The GPS source is part of the boat rather than something you&rsquo;re also using for messages, photos and everything else your phone does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may therefore be a more convenient solution for regular onboard monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the fundamental reference point remains the vessel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the boat swings, its GPS position changes even if the anchor hasn&rsquo;t moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means an appropriate alarm radius still has to account for the boat&rsquo;s normal movement around the anchor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dedicated anchor monitoring hardware<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A dedicated <strong>anchor monitoring system<\/strong> separates the job from your normal navigation electronics or everyday phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That doesn&rsquo;t automatically make it necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where dedicated hardware starts to make more sense is when anchoring becomes a major part of how you use the boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That might include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>living aboard<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>spending weeks or months outside marinas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>anchoring overnight regularly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cruising with family aboard<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>leaving the boat at anchor while going ashore<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>operating charter boats that anchor boat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another area that can get confusing is the difference between <strong>monitoring without mobile coverage<\/strong> and <strong>receiving alerts away from the boat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They&rsquo;re not the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alerts onboard<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Morph\u00e9is communicates between the buoy and receiver monitoring can sound complicated once specification sheets get involved, but the practical questions are fairly simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is actually being
